Raccoons

Rats

  • Rats are medium-sized rodents with long tails and sharp, ever-growing front teeth used for gnawing.​

  • They are mainly nocturnal and have excellent hearing, smell, and touch, which helps them navigate and find food in the dark.​

  • A group of rats is called a “mischief,” and they are highly adaptable, thriving in cities, sewers, farms, and buildings worldwide.​

Skunks

  • Skunks are famous for a powerful sulfur-scented spray they use as a defense against predators.​

  • Their spray can accurately reach about 10 feet and the smell can be detected up to around a mile away.​

  • Before spraying, skunks usually warn by stomping their feet, hissing, and lifting their tail.

Mice

  • Mice are small rodents with large ears, long tails, and sharp, continuously growing front teeth for gnawing.​

  • They are mostly nocturnal and rely heavily on their keen sense of smell and hearing to find food and avoid predators.​

  • Mice reproduce quickly, having multiple litters per year, which allows infestations to grow rapidly if not controlled.​

Possums

  • Opossums are known for “playing dead” when threatened, an involuntary state where they go limp, bare their teeth, and may emit a foul odor to deter predators.​

  • They are excellent climbers, using their prehensile tails and opposable thumbs on their hind feet to grip branches and balance.​

  • Opossums are nocturnal omnivores that eat insects, small animals, fruit, carrion, and even garbage, helping clean up pests and organic waste.​

Armadillos

  • Armadillos are small to medium mammals known for their hard, bony armor plates that protect their head, back, and tail.​

  • Most armadillos are excellent diggers, using strong claws to burrow for food and shelter, which can damage lawns and gardens.​

  • They are primarily nocturnal and eat insects and other invertebrates, often rooting in soil to find beetles, grubs, and ants.​
